San Mateo County Community College District Joins Peninsula Clean Energy

SMCCCD will use enough affordable, 100% clean electricity to power more than 3,000 San Mateo County homes

REDWOOD CITY, CA – The San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) Board of Trustees has approved transitioning its power generation provider to Peninsula Clean Energy beginning in July.

The decision by SMCCCD to join Peninsula Clean Energy came after a competitive public bidding process that highlighted Peninsula Clean Energy’s more affordable and cleaner power mix.

“We chose Peninsula Clean Energy because they will provide the best value, both in meeting our ambitious climate goals and cutting our energy costs,” said SMCCCD Chancellor Melissa Moreno.

SMCCCD will add an estimated 15 gigawatt-hours of new power demand to Peninsula Clean Energy’s customer base, the equivalent of more than 3,000 homes. That places SMCCCD among the top 20 Peninsula Clean Energy customers in terms of power use and represents more than a third of the 40 gigawatt-hours of new electric load joining Peninsula Clean Energy since the start of 2024. This growth coincides with the agency’s continued commitment to financial strength, evidenced by receiving its highest credit agency rating a year ago from S&P Global.

SMCCCD has previously partnered with Peninsula Clean Energy on energy engagement education grants and student internships to develop the next generation of clean energy innovators. That includes engaging students by developing interactive exhibits focusing on clean energy, electrification and related careers.

“We are excited to deepen our relationship with SMCCCD, including not just providing their power generation but also opening the door to a variety of programs to help the district electrify buildings and fleets,” said Peninsula Clean Energy CEO Shawn Marshall. “As their locally-run public power provider of choice, we are well positioned to understand and meet their needs as a reliable and trusted energy partner.”
