Peninsula Clean Energy Keeps Electric Generation Rates 5 Percent Lower than PG&E

The agency has saved customers $107 million, including $17 million in 2022

REDWOOD CITY, CA – March 28, 2023 – Peninsula Clean Energy is keeping its ECOplus electric generation rates for its San Mateo County and the City of Los Banos customers at least five percent below PG&E’s baseline electric generation rate.

Since Peninsula Clean Energy service began in San Mateo County in the fall of 2016, customers automatically enrolled in the agency’s default ECOplus program have saved $107 million, including $17 million in 2022, as a result of a long-standing policy to offer customers a minimum 5 percent discount compared with what they would have paid for electric generation with PG&E service. ECOplus also offers a cleaner power mix than PG&E, consisting of 100 percent clean and 50 percent renewable energy.

Our community is where our commitment is. Through reinvestment and protection against skyrocketing energy costs, Peninsula Clean Energy will continue to deliver cost effective clean energy to everyone in San Mateo County and the City of Los Banos,” said Millbrae Councilmember Anders Fung, who is a member of Peninsula Clean Energy’s board of directors.

“We are providing our customers with the best of both worlds: Cleaner electricity and at lower costs,” Peninsula Clean Energy CEO Jan Pepper said. “In doing so, we are staying on path in our sector-leading effort to reliably and affordably deliver emission-free, all-renewable power every hour of each day.”

The Peninsula Clean Energy electric generation charge shows up as a separate line item on its customers’ PG&E bills but it replaces what would have been a higher generation charge imposed by PG&E. PG&E still charges all customers, including those receiving Peninsula Clean Energy-generated power, for delivering the electricity.

The agency’s discounted generation rate comes amid its continued progress toward a utility-sector leading goal of providing 100 percent renewable power on an hourly basis every day of the year.
