Local Leaders Celebrate Landmark New Brisbane Community Pool Electric Heating System
First municipal pool in California to replace existing gas heat with clean, cost-efficient electric system

BRISBANE, CA — June 10, 2026 — Local leaders joined Peninsula Clean Energy in celebrating the first project in California to convert an existing municipal swimming pool’s primary heating system from methane gas to electric air source heat pumps.
The Brisbane Community Pool’s aging gas-fired boiler was replaced with three new high-efficiency electric air source pumps, eliminating one of Brisbane’s largest remaining sources of municipal fossil fuel consumption.
This innovative upgrade is projected to reduce methane gas use at the facility by roughly 86 percent, which reduces emissions equivalent to removing 42 gasoline-powered cars from the road each year. It will also generate an estimated $15,000 in annual operational savings.
“Brisbane was proud to partner with Peninsula Clean Energy on this project. It shows that innovative large-scale energy solutions are possible in all our communities. The benefits will be significant for years to come,” Brisbane Mayor Coleen Mackin said
“Projects like this show what is possible when local governments and community partners work together to invest in innovative solutions that benefit both people and the planet. They demonstrate that sustainability and fiscal responsibility can go hand in hand,” said San Bruno Councilmember Marty Medina, who chairs Peninsula Clean Energy’s Board of Directors.
“I was delighted to award the City of Brisbane a $200,000 grant in Measure K district-discretionary funds to replace the aging boiler with cutting-edge electric heat pump water heaters. It is through collaborative efforts that we can transform challenges into opportunities and create a lasting legacy of sustainability for generations to come,” San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa said.
Representatives from U.S. Congressman Kevin Mullin, State Sen. Josh Becker and State Assemblymember Diane Papan were also on hand to celebrate the new heating system.
Peninsula Clean Energy contributed $1.1 million in incentives and loans to complete the pool.
Other state and regional funding sources also contributed, including $200,000 in Measure K funds from the County of San Mateo. Willdan Energy Solutions led the design, engineering and construction of an electric system that minimizes the need for fossil fuel backup heat.
The Brisbane pool is part of a larger effort by Peninsula Clean Energy to support public agencies who are taking the lead in San Mateo County and Los Banos in combatting climate change and indoor air pollution by converting from methane gas to clean, efficient electricity.
That includes other efforts to tackle some of the biggest sources of municipal greenhouse gas emissions, such as electrifying all municipal buildings in Half Moon Bay, air conditioning units at major government facilities in Los Banos, water heaters in East Palo Alto and electrifying the Belle Haven Child Development Center in Menlo Park.
