EDP Renewables North America, has finalized works on a 92-MW/368-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in California’s Kern County. The Sandrini Energy Storage project is co-located with EDP Renewables North America’s 300-MW Sandrini Solar complex and has an energy storage service agreement with Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA) covering all of the battery’s capacity, EDP said on Tuesday.
“The addition of the Sandrini Energy Storage project to our portfolio supports RCEA’s goals of building new, clean capacity that matches our customers’ energy needs and enhances the generation delivered by Sandrini Solar, while also supporting grid reliability,” said RCEA executive director Beth Burks.
The Sandrini battery is capable of supplying electricity equivalent to the needs of more than 22,000 California homes, according to EDP. RCEA is purchasing 100 MW of electricity from the Sandrini Solar complex, while the remaining 200 MW generated by the facility is placed under an off-take contract with energy trader Shell Energy North America (US) LP. Both solar power purchase agreements will run for 15 years.
