Clean Energy Alliance Furthers Commitment to Geothermal Energy with Letters of Intent
Carlsbad, CA — Clean Energy Alliance (CEA) has formally signed four exclusive letters of intent with three geothermal developers, marking a major milestone in its mission to deliver reliable, clean energy. The proposed projects will utilize a mix of both traditional and innovative geothermal technologies to diversify CEA’s energy portfolio.
CEA views clean, firm power as a critical component of its strategy to provide 100% renewable energy to customers by 2035. Renewable sources, like solar and wind that rely on the intermittency of the sun shining or the wind blowing, are complemented well by geothermal energy, which taps into the constant, natural heat stored deep in the earth. By harnessing this underground heat, geothermal power plants can provide a uniquely reliable, “always-on” backbone for the clean energy grid.
“In order to power California towards its vital yet ambitious 100% renewable energy future, the need for additional clean, firm renewable resources has never been greater,” says CEA Chief Executive Officer Greg Wade. “The development of geothermal resources will be an essential part of delivering on both the state’s mandates and on our own goal of providing consistent and reliable renewable energy to our customers in the years to come.”
CEA recognizes the importance of early-stage support for geothermal projects in facilitating the investment needed to bring these projects through their preconstruction development process. By entering into these agreements early on, CEA gives developers the backing they need to secure financing, while ensuring CEA locks in access to this 24/7 clean energy.
Moving forward, CEA will work in good faith with developers to strengthen commercial relationships, advocate for continued state and local support of geothermal development in the Western United States, track project development and pursue long-term Power Purchase Agreements as projects mature to a construction-ready stage.
