City of Brisbane Becomes First in California to Electrify an Existing Municipal Pool’s Primary Heating System
Brisbane, CA – The City of Brisbane is proud to announce that it is the first city in California to convert an existing municipal swimming pool’s primary heating system from natural gas to electric air source heat pumps. This historic clean energy achievement will be celebrated at a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on June 9, 2026 at 2:30 PM at the Brisbane Community Pool, located at 2 Solano Street.
The project replaces the pool’s aging gas-fired boiler with three high efficiency electric air source heat pumps, eliminating one of the City’s largest remaining sources of municipal fossil fuel consumption. This innovative upgrade is projected to reduce natural gas use at the facility by approximately 86%, delivering emissions reductions equivalent to removing 42 gas-powered cars from the road each year, while also generating an estimated $15,000 in annual operational savings.
“This milestone shows what is possible when innovation, strong partnerships, and climate leadership come together,” said Brisbane City Manager Jeremy Dennis.
“Brisbane is proud to lead the way for cities across California,” said Brisbane Mayor Coleen Mackin, who is also a member of Peninsula Clean Energy’s Board of Directors. “Converting our community pool’s primary heating system from gas to electric is more than an infrastructure upgrade – it’s a statement of who we are and the future we choose. This project shows that even small cities can set big examples in climate action, innovation, and environmental stewardship.”
This project was made possible through the partnership and support of Peninsula Clean Energy, Willdan Energy Solutions, and multiple state and regional funding sources, including $200,000 in Measure K funds from the County of San Mateo. Peninsula Clean Energy contributed major incentives supporting both natural gas reduction and electrical upgrades.
“Brisbane’s electrification of its municipal pool demonstrates exactly what’s possible when communities commit to bold climate solutions,” Peninsula Clean Energy CEO Shawn Marshall said. “We’re proud to support a project that delivers cleaner air, lower emissions, and long-term operational savings – and we hope it inspires more cities to follow Brisbane’s lead.”
Willdan Energy Solutions led design, engineering, and construction, delivering an electric system that meets updated technical requirements and minimizes the need for fossil fuel backup heat.
“Willdan shares the City’s commitments to decarbonization and climate action,” said Joshua Babcock of Willdan Energy Solutions. “We are proud to have served as an essential partner throughout the project process, from initial development and financing through design and construction.”
The City of Brisbane invites community members, regional sustainability leaders, and clean energy partners to attend the ribbon cutting and celebrate this important step toward a cleaner, healthier, fully electrified future.
