CCA-Developed Next-Generation Geothermal Could Have Energy to Sell

California Energy Markets

Next-generation geothermal technology projects planned in northern California could produce enough clean energy that two counties could rely on it for all their electricity needs while still leaving ample power to sell, according to a community choice aggregator spearheading the projects.

Sonoma Clean Power is partnering with Sonoma and Mendocino counties as well as three companies—Eavor Inc., Chevron New Energies and Cyrq Energy—to develop three different types of next-generation geothermal pilot projects that will be 20 MW each. The ultimate goal is to build a geothermal power plant that will provide 600 MW (California Energy Markets No. 1804).

“Today, 600 MW would provide roughly all the electricity needed to power Sonoma and Mendocino counties for all the buildings, a future where all the cars and trucks are electric, and all the industry,” Geof Syphers, CEO of Sonoma Clean Power (SCP), said at a Feb. 6 town hall meeting. “We probably wouldn’t end up taking all of that energy for ourselves in the early days because we also have a lot of solar power.”
